Bertoia Side Chair, Fully Upholstered, by Knoll
designed by Harry Bertoia
The Harry Bertoia side chair is constructed of steel rods with chrome polish, and a seat and back cushion that attaches to the chair with lock snaps. A brilliant aesthetic achievement and a staple of mid-century modern design, the chair's transparency and anti-space belies it's incredible strength and durability.
Creator Harry Bertoia came up with the design for the chair while doing studies in bent metal and negative space: "If you look at these chairs, they are mainly made of air, like sculpture. Space passes right through them." The resulting chair caused an instant sensation, and not only for it's strong aesthetic appeal. The innovative design and the wholly surprising comfort are what made the chair more than just a museum piece. Since it's first introduction in 1952, the Harry Bertoia side chair has been in continuous production, improving the modern home for more than half a century. Bring art into your home with the iconic Bertoia Side Chair.

About the Designer
Hans and Florence never insisted that Harry Bertoia design furniture when they originally gave him a studio in an early Knoll factory. They simply asked that he show them if he arrived at something interesting. He arrived at something outstanding. Introduced in 1952, the Bertoia Collection remains one of the great achievements of modern furniture design.
