About the Manufacturer

Greenington LogoCreativity and technology, glamour and functionality, quality and innovation: a combination of extraordinary factors together with a strategic vision of distribution has contributed to the lasting success of Kartell. By cultural and entrepreneurial choice, since its origins in 1949 the Italian manufacturer has chosen to characterize itself as the market leader in the production of designers articles which use technology and plastic materials. This choice requires a great understanding of materials and transformation technology. A leader in furniture design, Kartell addresses an international audience with a collection unique in originality, variety, size, and range.

Environmental Info

Contrary to the common idea, products in plastic materials are highly ecological for the reason that they can be recycled (with the exception of polyurethane, little used in Kartell seating). In addition, the use of plastics reduces the need for living plants, such as trees, which are costly and take years to replace. In order to simplify the recycling process, the various components of Kartell furniture can be easily separated and reduced to elements made of one single material. Moreover, the plastic parts of each product carry, clearly printed, an identification mark to determine the correct classification of the seven different kinds of plastic and their effective recycling.

Designed by Maarten van Severen

Maarten Van SeverenMaarten van Severen
The son of an abstract painter, Maarten Van Severen chose to study architecture at Ghent Art School. He completed three years before going to work in various agencies on interior design and furniture projects. In 1986, he turned his attention to furniture, namely tables, first using steel as a medium, then wood. His work, hand-produced in his workshop in Ghent, Belgium, reflects his quest for perfection in form, detail and fabrication. A man who loved materials, Maarten van Severen, who died in 2005, of lung cancer at the age of 49, was a designer par excellence. Some regard his furniture as an acquired taste. To others, it is mold-breaking, a revelation of simplicity that, to the uninitiated eye, belies the integrity, precision and perfection that goes into it. Van Severen always worked in tandem with producers but – with the help of two of his sons, David, an architect, and Hannes, a sculptor, who worked with their father – the company is determined to keep his spirit and vision alive, ensuring that his work isn't compromised.

Care & Maintenance

Simple care is needed for the maintenance of Kartell products to retain the original features of the materials.

Cleaning Use a soft damp cloth with soap or a liquid detergent, preferably diluted with water. Do not use acetone, trichloroethylene, ammonia or other corrosive plastic cleaners. Avoid ethyl alcohol, which dulls the surface. We recommend always using a damp cloth to prevent plastic surfaces from becoming charged with static electricity which attracts dust. Also avoid abrasive solvents, cleaning powders and creams, steel wool or rough sponge cloths.

Use Do not drag objects across the plastic surface, even if it has a scratch resistant finish, since sharp objects can damage the plastic just as they would damage wood or metal. Do not place very hot plates or pots directly on the surface, but always use a cloth or trivet.

Cleaning As with plastic surfaces, use a soft damp cloth. Do not use alcohol or other spot removers. For a deeper cleaning use a little nonabrasive liquid detergent and wipe in the direction of the wood grain. Dry the surface well with a soft cloth. Never use acetone, trichloroethylene or

Use Moisture in wood can cause swelling which is normal in a natural material. Our woods hold up well under normal temperature and humidity conditions. Slight color variations from one piece of wood to another are normal and these tend to disappear with time. Wood can change color over time. To delay this, it is best to avoid placing it in direct sunlight.

Cleaning Normal soil on a steel or aluminum surface, whether natural or painted, should be removed with luke-warm water and a liquid household cleaner using a soft cloth or chamois. Never use cleaning powders, abrasive or steel wool pads, which can cause scratching, or liquid
detergents that contain chlorine or its derivatives such as bleach or muriatic acid.

Use Avoid spilling grapefruit juice, cola, salt and coffee on metal surfaces. These can cause indelible stains. To remove black marks on aluminum chair legs, products especially made for steel finishes or non-abrasive car polishes are recommended.

Kartell uses different kinds of covers, for each one you may find the appropriate cleaning and usage instructions within the instruction card enclosed in the packaging.
