About the Manufacturer

Greenington LogoCreativity and technology, glamour and functionality, quality and innovation: a combination of extraordinary factors together with a strategic vision of distribution has contributed to the lasting success of Kartell. By cultural and entrepreneurial choice, since its origins in 1949 the Italian manufacturer has chosen to characterize itself as the market leader in the production of designers articles which use technology and plastic materials. This choice requires a great understanding of materials and transformation technology. A leader in furniture design, Kartell addresses an international audience with a collection unique in originality, variety, size, and range.

Environmental Info

Contrary to the common idea, products in plastic materials are highly ecological for the reason that they can be recycled (with the exception of polyurethane, little used in Kartell seating). In addition, the use of plastics reduces the need for living plants, such as trees, which are costly and take years to replace. In order to simplify the recycling process, the various components of Kartell furniture can be easily separated and reduced to elements made of one single material. Moreover, the plastic parts of each product carry, clearly printed, an identification mark to determine the correct classification of the seven different kinds of plastic and their effective recycling.

Designed by Vico Magistretti

Vico MagistrettiVico Magistretti
Vico Magistretti was born in Milan in 1920. He graduated from the Polytechnico in Milan in 1945. In the wake of the devastation of World War II, the young architect was inspired by modernist ideals. He sought to create a new kind of design which was simple, functional, rational, elegant -- and anonymous. He wanted to produce "anonymous traditional objects" which seemed to have evolved organically rather than to have been designed. This attitude was evident already in the first pieces he exhibited in the late forties, including bookshelves suspended from metal tubes, a bookcase which resembled a ladder, and stackable tables. Magistretti has influenced generations of designers with his emphasis on what he calls "concept design." Concept design, he says, "starts from a precise executive and functional concept and is so simple that it endows the object with its distinctive character." This type of design is so simple that it can be described without a drawing. He rejects the opposite way of working, which he calls "styling design" and which means useless or redundant decoration. In the course of his long and productive career, Vico Magistretti has won innumerable awards and honors, including three Compasso d'Oro awards. His work is in museums worldwide. In his Milano studio, he continued to create designs whose simplicity and freshness express the essence of his spirit until he passed away in October 2006.

Care & Maintenance

Simple care is needed for the maintenance of Kartell products to retain the original features of the materials.

PLASTIC MATERIALS
Cleaning Use a soft damp cloth with soap or a liquid detergent, preferably diluted with water. Do not use acetone, trichloroethylene, ammonia or other corrosive plastic cleaners. Avoid ethyl alcohol, which dulls the surface. We recommend always using a damp cloth to prevent plastic surfaces from becoming charged with static electricity which attracts dust. Also avoid abrasive solvents, cleaning powders and creams, steel wool or rough sponge cloths.

Use Do not drag objects across the plastic surface, even if it has a scratch resistant finish, since sharp objects can damage the plastic just as they would damage wood or metal. Do not place very hot plates or pots directly on the surface, but always use a cloth or trivet.

WOOD
Cleaning As with plastic surfaces, use a soft damp cloth. Do not use alcohol or other spot removers. For a deeper cleaning use a little nonabrasive liquid detergent and wipe in the direction of the wood grain. Dry the surface well with a soft cloth. Never use acetone, trichloroethylene or
ammonia.

Use Moisture in wood can cause swelling which is normal in a natural material. Our woods hold up well under normal temperature and humidity conditions. Slight color variations from one piece of wood to another are normal and these tend to disappear with time. Wood can change color over time. To delay this, it is best to avoid placing it in direct sunlight.

METALS
Cleaning Normal soil on a steel or aluminum surface, whether natural or painted, should be removed with luke-warm water and a liquid household cleaner using a soft cloth or chamois. Never use cleaning powders, abrasive or steel wool pads, which can cause scratching, or liquid
detergents that contain chlorine or its derivatives such as bleach or muriatic acid.

Use Avoid spilling grapefruit juice, cola, salt and coffee on metal surfaces. These can cause indelible stains. To remove black marks on aluminum chair legs, products especially made for steel finishes or non-abrasive car polishes are recommended.

COVER
Kartell uses different kinds of covers, for each one you may find the appropriate cleaning and usage instructions within the instruction card enclosed in the packaging.
