Nelson Thin Edge Bed by Herman Miller®
designed by George Nelson
Keeping with George Nelson's vision of pieces that could be adapted for the times, the Nelson Thin Edge Bed (1954) now features slats instead of springs to accommodate memory foam mattresses. Finishes, including walnut and white ash, reflect new technologies and consumer preferences. The headboard is available with or without woven cane; legs may be solid wood or stainless steel. But even with these updates, this unmistakably remains a Nelson bed frame in its simplicity and quiet beauty.
- Solid walnut or white-ash frame.
- Solid ash slats allow for air circulation.
- Two headboard and base styles.
- Legs available in solid wood or stainless steel.
- Sizes and wood finishes reflect today’s aesthetics.
The Thin Edge Collection reinterprets George Nelson's Rosewood Case Series, utilizing the designs but contemporizing the materials and production. The Nelson Bed has the original's hallmarks, including a slim profile and expert woodcraft, but comes in larger sizes and more sustainable finishes.
- Solid walnut or white-ash frame
- Solid ash slats.
- Walnut or white ash veneer headboard with or without natural woven cane pane
- Stainless steel headboard support with satin chrome finish.
- Solid walnut or white ash legs or stainless steel H-frame legs with satin chrome finish
About the Designer
From the ingenious StorageWall, to the cheerful face of the Ball Clock and his luminous Bubble Lights, George Nelson’s modern designs for Herman Miller helped establish the optimistic look and feel of postwar American life. With color, verve, and ingenious use of postwar materials, George Nelson helped forge the aesthetics of American design in the atomic age. Born in Connecticut in 1908, Nelson studied architecture and fine arts at Yale. In 1932, he won the Rome Prize, traveled to Europe and interviewed the likes of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. He wrote about design for Architectural Forum, and in 1945 co-authored Tomorrow’s House with Henry Wright, introducing the concept of the “family room.”
