Nelson Thin Edge King Bed by Herman Miller

"In an era of movement, we find that planes set the style." -George Nelson.

Representative of George Nelson's timeless, human-centered approach to design, the Nelson Thin Edge Bed is as at home in today's bedrooms as it was when first introduced in 1954. With a slim, horizontal profile, efficient and precise detailing, and expert woodcraft, the Nelson Thin Edge bed brings elegant minimalism to the bedroom once more.

The platform acted as a means for systemization in George Nelson’s early designs for Herman Miller. This strategy was born from his 1945 Platform Bench, designed at once as a standalone bench, and also as a foundation for an array of modular case goods. Nelson’s formula was simple: Create a lithe, horizontal surface supported by lean legs to offer the utmost ease in flexible storage and cleaning underfoot for an efficient home. This criterion extended to the office and the bedroom where the Thin Edge Bed offered streamlined mattress support.

In 1954, George Nelson engineered the Thin Edge Bed to eliminate the need for bulky box springs and a hefty mattress. The original design used Danish springs for undercarriage support and came with a dense foam mattress that allowed it to remain buoyant yet lissome.

With the full cooperation of the Nelson Foundation, Herman Miller has updated the archival design to support the contemporary home. Now, solid hardwood Ash slats offer more support and durability than the original springs, even as we’ve expanded our bed sizes to include Twin, Full, Queen, King and California King varieties. A trim footboard holds the mattress in place.

  • In keeping with the discretion of the Nelson Thin Edge Bed’s platform, its headboard offers just enough pitch and support for the sitter or sleeper without much separation from the wall behind. Nelson Thin Edge bed comes with a natural cane headboard, adding texture to the design, or a veneer headboard that echoes the bed’s minimalist tenor.
  • The cane reeds each possess unique color striations ranging anywhere from light tan to deep brown with shots of green, pink, and yellow, adding up to a multidimensional effect. This natural variation reverberates in the varied wood grain of the platform and footboard.
  • The original H-Frame legs represent a mark of distinction for the Nelson Thin Edge Bed and are in keeping with the structural metal legs seen in Nelson’s X-Leg Table and Desk, as well as the Metal Base version of the Nelson Platform Bench. Made from stainless steel, the H-Frame’s slight angle references the pitch of the bed’s headboard and its distributed support of the bed itself. In addition to the H-Frame leg, we’ve added a tapered wood leg option to accommodate the desire for a full wood frame.
  • The Thin Edge Bed was originally offered in Walnut and Birch. We continue this material heritage with sustainably harvested Walnut, as well as an updated version in White Ash, a more durable and richer wood than the original Birch. The bed’s supports are expertly crafted in stainless steel with a satin chrome finish.
